In this conference, we shall look at the multiplicity of time scales in complex systems. Particularly, we are interested in the power and the uncertainties in modelling such systems with a multiplicity of processes interacting. We have four reasons for focusing on the multiplicity of time scales:

  1. From a mathematical point of view, systems with a multiplicity of time scales are particularly challenging for a representative collection of data, for the selection of dominant relations in the modelling process and their dimensionless formulation, for the choice of time steps in the numerical simulation, and for finding characteristic qualitative features.

  2. Precisely these characteristic qualitative features of interacting processes, like structural instability, feedbacks, runaway processes, tipping points, limits and limit cycles are often decisive, but always difficult to communicate between scientists with different background and, even more so, between scientists and the public.

  3. In these systems, there is a subtle balance between certainty and uncertainty, guidance and misguidance with regard to the description (data gathering), prediction of future outcome, and prescription of advisable measures.

  4. Complex systems with interacting processes are ubiquitary. The associated features and challenges are universal. For each of the different fields that we shall touch in our conference one could easily call an expert conference devoted to such a single field. Contrary to the normal specialization and segmentation, we wish to contribute to another epistemic culture with a substantial exchange of working experiences between different branches.
